The little figlets ...
Mixing up the order of things today. I'll be taking some time away from posting after post 2.
Normally the gardening thing would be the last one of the day, but I wanted to have that post be related to the 4th, so garden comes first.
I thought I'd update on my figs.
The winter previous to this last one was a tough one. All the figs I had (all of them the Chicago Hardy variety, two purchased and two propagated from cuttings) nearly died. Apparently my garage is not warm enough. Not warm enough even with heat lamps and water bottles as thermal ballast.
So this last winter, I put the figs in the crawlspace and faced the opposite problem. They started breaking their dormancy way early.
Long story short, I think that having the hassle of getting them in the sun prior to it being warm enough meant that they all got a head start. And they've capitalized on it.
They're now at point that little figlets are popping out. Pictures 1 and 2 show a couple of them. From my experience last year, these are big for this time of year!
I guess if I had to pick, I'd rather this problem than thinking I'd killed them and was back to square one.
This new growing season brings a new addition too: Violet De Bordeaux (that's the variety name not a name I gave it). Violet is growing well in her bucket, and, though not as far along as my eldest Chicago Hardy, I am seeing some little tiny bumps. Pictures 3 and 4 show her in her bucket and some little nubs which may become fruit. We'll see.
Soon enough I'll be pinching the tops to (according to my research) drive the fig to focus on fruit and not stem.
Fingers crossed and a reminder (to myself) that sometimes the outcome is not something we can control.
What is freedom to you?
This is the last post of the day and the last post til next Monday (7/8) because I'm stepping away from my computer for a few days.
I wanted to leave something up that you can reply to and add to over that period should you feel motivated to do so.
So, a question:
In a single sentence, what is freedom to you?
Freedom to me means that, to the extent I'm not harming you, you don't tell me how to live and I don't tell you how to live.
Have a good Fourth and remember at some point to celebrate your freedom (in your own way of course)!
Freedom, for me, is the right to choose to not be a victim.
Freedom to me means that a person should live the life they choose as long as it doesn’t infringe negatively on the life of another. Live free or die.🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸
