How can the media get some credibility back? Gov Polis presents a false choice on Prop HH. And, because it's Friday, Stranger on the Shore.
An answer to some questions re the media
I saw the op ed below linked to a journalism professor's twitter account. I didn't find much there of interest to me except for the bit I attached as a screenshot.
See the questions I underlined?
My response to the author would be the following:
I don't know that I have all the answers, but I can tell you a couple things that would be a good start.
First, those in the media should have the humility to seek out, recognize, and acknowledge their role in the public's distrust. At that point, they should work to fix it.
I won't tell you I'm perfect, but I do actively try to pay attention to the students who send in negative comments about me or my class during class evaluations. You should listen to your critics. It doesn't mean they always have a valid point. It doesn't mean that you shouldn't defend your actions.
What it means is that you have the attitude that you're not perfect and that you are actively asking yourself in cases of a disagreement or problem, "what part of this do I own?" To be specific, maybe when someone complains about your coverage or lack thereof, you don't brush it off as upset over the fact that you cover things people find controversial.
Second, you shouldn't treat media consumers like idiots. People, even little ones, have really sensitive BS detectors. They know when they're fed a line and, I think, abhor hypocrisy and disingenuousness over an honest disagreement or different values.
A sure fix? No. A good start to rebuilding trust? Yes.

Polis presents a false choice with Prop HH.
I recently listened to an interview between CPR's Ryan Warner and Gov Polis which covered, among other things, Polis' thoughts on Prop HH.
I will go into more detail on this topic tomorrow and Sunday, but I wanted to do a quick intro/explainer video.
It's linked below.
Stranger on the Shore...
This is the last one of the day and you know what that means. I'm going to post something for fun that's not related to politics.
This one will be short. I was listening to an online radio station the other day and the song "Stranger on the Shore" came on.
Man, I hadn't heard it in years. It didn't spark any particular memory, just a pleasant mellow feeling.
I hope it gives you a fond memory or perhaps the same pleasant feeling.
Have a good Friday! Ease on into the weekend ...
**Speaking of Strangers …
This is the latest (and I think last for the spring/summer--I think I need professional help when it comes to plants) addition to the plant menagerie: a wintergreen plant.
Wintergreen is one of my favorite flavors and apparently the leaves can be used for tea, but I'll be honest, I bought this as much as anything for a curiosity.
It's an evergreen and an acid lover (so it'll be in good company sitting in pure peat with the blueberries and cranberry) and I think will be really pretty with its red berries.
Plus, now I can say that I've grown and tended wintergreen.
If I get especially ambitious I may (what am I saying may, I almost certainly will) try distilling the flavor out of the berries for use in candies this Fall/Winter.
