CBI's stats on increasing our safety are skin deep. I better figure out how to set my Jitterbug over to speakerphone.
CBI's stats on increasing our safety are skin deep.
Governor Polis put out a press release at the end of September about making Colorado safer. I linked to that below.
One of the things he used to bolster his claim was stats from Colorado Bureau of Investigation, courtesy of their expanded authority for gun crimes in Colorado which comes from SB24-003. I linked to that bill second below.
In order to spare you having to read the governor's press release, I went and plucked out the language pertinent to this bill and attached it as screenshot 1.
I was curious to see if there were any patterns in either time or geography on these statistics. Where (and how many unique cases) were there for the firearm seizures? Where in Colorado are the arrests for illegal firearms possession happening?
How impressive these stats are would depend somewhat on the details, no? Also where the crime was happening would also be valuable to know.
Unfortunately, after multiple emails, all I could get from CBI's press spokesman was that this is all the detail they have. There is no breakdown of these stats.
The best they could tell me was that in about 6 months, they might have the ability to give more information than just talking points to make our governor look good.
Well, okay, that last bit about making Polis look good was my addition, but you get the point.
I made a reminder and will be checking back. Watch for updates as I have them.

I better figure out how to set my Jitterbug over to speakerphone ...
The running joke in my family is that, since I have NOT gone up to a smartphone, that I have the Jitterbug, the flip phone for old people.
Truth is, I have considered it. I do have a flip, albeit non-Jitterbug, phone, and am happy to talk and text. It has come in handy to ask someone with a smartphone to do this or that, but it’s never felt necessary for me. Camera's nice, so I suppose there's that.
Going to have to learn how to do speakerphone though because starting on Jan 1, 2025 if I am holding my phone up to my ear and talking I can get a ticket.
Quoting the CBS article linked below:
"Penalties for violating the new law start with a $75 fine and two license suspension points for the first offense. It takes 12 points for your license to get suspended. First-time violators can have the charge dismissed if they provide proof of purchasing a hands-free accessory. Repeat offenders face higher fines and more license suspension points."
The bill itself, if you want to read up on it (and see the Superstar lineup of progressives who sponsored it) is linked second below.
Be careful out there!
